Situated off of the north-west coast of the Greek mainland, Corfu (Kerkyra) is an idyllic island getaway famed for its sun-drenched beaches and quaint fishing villages perched on the Mediterranean Sea.  As the northern-most island in the Ionian chain, half of Corfu's land-mass runs parallel to the Albanian coastline whilst the other half is closer to Greece, though Corfu itself has spent much of it's history controlled by Venetian, British and Italian rulers.  Following it's liberation from Italian occupiers in World War II, the island was absorbed into Greek administration and has remained a part of the Greek family ever since.  The island's rich history has left it with a tableau of interesting sights including the Achillieon Palace (built in the nineteenth century), the Archaeological Museum, the Old Fortress and New Fortress (both located in the Old Town), and the Byzantine Museum.

Corfu is serviced by Corfu International Airport (Ioannis Kapodistrias), located a few kilometres to the south of Corfu Town.  Several airlines visit the airport, including scheduled flights from Easy Jet, First Choice Airways, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Fly and XL Airways, with many more charter flights occurring in the summer period.  There are a few car hire companies located at the airport, Hertz, Europcar and Avis, though it is recommended that you book your car ahead of arrival if you are travelling in the busy summer months.  Route 24 connects Corfu Town (Kerkira) with many of the northern towns, including Paliokastritsa, Anacharavi and Agnitsini.
